As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Senator Rob Rolison and Assemblyman Matt Slater introduced legislation that would extend the amount of time survivors of domestic violence can remain in shelter. The bill also accounts for additional funding to support the agencies providing these life-saving services, ensuring that programs have the resources needed to continue meeting survivors where they are.
Putting a stopwatch on a survivor’s healing process doesn’t reflect the realities of rebuilding safety and stability after abuse. This bill acknowledges that every survivor’s journey is different, and that sometimes, safety takes more time. This legislation would allow survivors to apply for a waiver that extends their shelter stay, giving them the time and stability they need to find housing, secure income, and rebuild their lives free from violence.
