BIG WIN FOR SURVIVORS! The NY Legislature has just passed S.1353-B/A.3038-B, one of the strongest coerced-debt bills in the U.S., and it now heads to the next step.
What does the bill do?
- Defines coerced debt and economic abuse in NY law for the first time.
- Gives survivors a legal path to challenge or eliminate debt they were forced to take on by abusers (like credit cards, loans, leases, or bills opened in their name under duress).
- Stops abusers from using debt as a weapon to trap survivors in poverty or unsafe situations, and restores financial freedom for people trying to rebuild their lives.
This bill was championed by a powerful coalition of survivors, advocates, and attorneys who stood up to powerful creditor lobbies. And we won! Next stop: Governor Hochul. Let’s urge her to sign this bill into law and protect survivors from financial abuse.
